Radiation

Radiation

Radiation is colourless, tasteless, odourless. Some people are unaware of it, while others are fearful from what they have heard about it – the harm it can do to the human body, the ecosystem and the environment.

Radiation surrounds and permeates us, within and without. Taking the form of electromagnetic waves, radiation travels through vacuum or media, and can be ionizing or non-ionizing.

The chart on the left-hand side shows the electromagnetic spectrum from low to high frequency, starting from non-ionizing waves that emanate from radio towers, high voltage electric lines, mobile phones, electronic devices, microwave oven, radar, moving up the spectrum to infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, and then to the high frequency ionizing waves of X-rays and gamma rays.
